19 Mar Could you help a young person this summer ?
A local community theatre company is providing a unique opportunity for young people aged 10-16 to participate in the arts this summer.
Northamptonshire based Laugh Out Loud Theatre Company is bringing back their popular Summer Drama Camp for a second year running. The week, which runs from 29th July – 2nd August 2024, will be packed full of drama games, techniques and activities that encourage creativity and social interaction, build confidence, improve communication, public speaking and team building skills, and benefit mental and physical health and wellbeing. The group of young people will also get to perform with professional actors in two public performances of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ at Stanwick Lakes outdoor theatre at 2pm and 5pm on Saturday 3rd August.
Company director Emma Kendrick said, “Last year our troupe of budding young thespians performed Martin Riley’s ‘The Canterbury Tales’ at Winwick Hall and we were able to offer 5 full and 2 partial bursary places thanks to being awarded a grant from the Constance Travis Fund through Northamptonshire Community Foundation. This resulted in one of the most rewarding weeks of my career, seeing these young people from very diverse backgrounds being able to flourish and given such a unique and invaluable experience that they wouldn’t have received if we weren’t able to take away the barriers to finance.”
A government report published by the Department of Work and Pensions in April 2022 showed that an estimated 13.8 percent of under sixteen year olds in North Northants lived in families with low incomes.
“We would love to offer more bursary places this year, with the help of local businesses, so that even more young people can benefit from this week-long experience and gain transferable skills that will help them in their future endeavours. If any local businesses are able to support this initiative, please get in touch. I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Ruth Curtis from Rushden Escape Rooms for sponsoring our first bursary place.”
