NNBN Delapre

Meeting Summary: Jessica Maryan Presents At Delapre Meeting

Last night’s NNBN meeting at Delapre Abbey saw a great presentation from Jessica Maryan from Meadow Interpreting as attendees from businesses, charities and organisations from across Northamptonshire learned more about the services offered by Meadow Interpreting and communication skills when communicating with the deaf community.

Jessica formed Meadow Interpreting to help the deaf community engage and her aims are to prioritise the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people in their everyday lives. Meadow Interpreting offers British Sign Language and Deaf Relay interpreting, Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses, and Deaf Awareness workshops services throughout the UK as well as offering bespoke Deaf awareness training courses ranging from an hour long to a full day. These can include British Sign Language sessions.

With over 20 years in the Deaf community and expertise in understanding the needs of deaf people, Jessica spoke through her interpreter to give attendees an insight and understanding of how she feels as a deaf business owner and how we can communicate more effectively.

Key points raised were:

  • When a deaf person uses an interpreter, you should always speak directly to the deaf person.
  • Not all deaf people use sign language; they may prefer lipreading – ask a deaf person’s preference.
  • The interpreter is there to facilitate communication between parties.

Jessica also offered further advice on what to Do and Don’t Do when communicating with a deaf person:

DO

  • Make sure you have the person’s attention before you start to talk
  • Use clear lip patterns
  • Ensure you are facing the Deaf person at all times
  • Use expressive body and face gestures
  • Be patient
  • Be clear and get to the point and use plain, straightforward language

DON’T

  • Shout
  • Cover your mouth or turn away from the Deaf person
  • Speak too slowly (this will make your lip pattern more difficult to understand)
  • Use unnecessarily long sentences

Finishing her presentation, Jessica led the attendees through a signing session where she showed us how to sign the alphabet letters.
