19 Dec More than £2 million towards maintaining North Northamptonshire’s roads considered at this week’s Executive meeting
Executive members will consider the proposal to accept more than £2 million in government funding towards the improvement of North Northamptonshire’s roads at this week’s Executive meeting.
The Additional Highway Maintenance Funding, from the Department for Transport, is part of the Government’s eleven-year plan to invest in road maintenance and arises from the cancellation of the Northern HS2 line. It is also in accordance with the Network North plan, which allocated a total of £2,2 Billion for the Midlands.
Members will be asked to approve the first two years funding of £1.069m per year in 2023/24 and 2024/25 to be used for resurfacing/reconstruction schemes, inlaid patching works or permanent repairs to potholes.
This additional funding would add to the existing budget for highway maintenance and enable even more schemes to be completed. It would contribute towards the maintenance of the highway network in North Northamptonshire to a safe standard in accordance with the Northamptonshire Asset Management Plan, and Network Management Plan.
Cllr Matthew Binley, Executive Member for Highways Travel and Assets, said:
“I welcome this prospective funding, and acknowledgement from the Government that maintaining our roads can bring real benefits for everyone who uses our local highway network.
“With so many miles of roads maintained in North Northamptonshire, this funding would enable us to carry out additional maintenance works across the network.”
Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council, said:
“We are committed to ensuring that our communities are connected with one another so they are able to shape their lives and the areas where they live.
“Latest Department for Transport figures reveal that 2.18 billion vehicle miles were travelled on roads in North Northamptonshire in 2022. This is welcome funding from the Government, which means that those journeys made by the residents of North Northamptonshire will be smoother and safer.”
North Northamptonshire Council’s Executive will meet on Thursday 21 December at 10am in the Corby Cube. All papers are available online and the meeting will be livestreamed on YouTube.
